The memory: 1994/1995(?) Coys Festival - can't remember which year, in all honesty, but there was Stirling Moss in a historic race. He qualified 8th in his black car (I really wish I still had the programme so I could be more specific) & it soon became clear he had a major car problem on the warm-up lap. Groans emitted from the crowd, denied a chance to see the maestro in action. But he got going - he started almost a lap behind but he swarmed through the field (of over 30) to finish 9th, just 30 secs in the end, behind the winner. It was a storming drive, at this a man well in his 60's & I knew I'd seen a legend still produce the best & I am very grateful for having done so.

Norrkцping GP in Sweden in -86 or -87. It was a historic race meeting held in the middle of the town Norrkцping, hence a street race. Lots of motorsports heroes were there: David Piper, Richard Attwood, Reine Wisell etc. Stirling was driving a Chevron B16, the engine plagued buy misfiring, but nevertheless advancing through the field once it started to rain. I'm proud of having witnessed a drive of the remarkable man, although the thing that impressed me most at the time was the sound of a McLaren Can-Am car passing our seats.

This reminded me that Stirling made a very low key return to international competition in 1965 when he competed in the East African Safari with his brother-in-law Eric Carlsson in a works Saab 96. This was a serious attempt at the rally. At the time the Saabs were serious contenders with Eric having finished second the previous year and sixth in 1962 when Stirling's sister Pat, his fiancee, had finished third. The ballot for starting positions was an all-in affair with no regard for the size of car and they drew number 68. Unfortunately they retired early in the rally.

He ran in the Bathurst 1000 in 1976 with Jack Brabham as co-driver in a Holden Torana L34. It stalled on the grid, as I recall, and was shortened considerably by a Dolomite from the back of the field... patched and repaired, it continued for a good many laps so that the sponsors could get some value of what they'd put into this much publicised entry of two past champs.
